Waiting on Wednesday #3

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

This week’s Waiting on Wednesday post is for The Demigod Diaries by Rick Riordan (Disney-Hyperion):

What dangers do runaway demigods Luke and Thalia face on their way to Camp Half-Blood? Are Percy and Annabeth up to the task of rescuing stolen goods from a fire-breathing giant who doesn’t take kindly to intruders? How exactly are Leo, Piper, and Jason supposed to find a runaway table, dodge a band of party-loving Maenads (who just might be a little psychotic), and stave off a massive explosion…all in one hour or less?

With his trademark wit and creativity, Rick Riordan answers these questions and more in three never-before-seen short stories that provide vital back-story to the Heroes of Olympus and Percy Jackson books. Original art, enlightening character interviews and profiles, puzzles, and a quiz add to the fun in this action-packed collection.

Why I’m looking forward to this book:

If you follow this blog at all, you’ve probably been able to deduce that I am a massive, MASSIVE fan of anything Rick Riordan writes that incorporates mythology. This all started with The Lightning Thief, which I absolutely loved, and has continued on through the rest of the Percy Jackson books, on to the sequel series, The Heroes of Olympus. I adored The Demigod Files, which was the companion book to the Percy books, particularly the little insights the stories provided into life at camp and some of the more minor characters (Beckendorf! ♥). The Demigod Diaries is particularly intriguing to me because of the inclusion of the story featuring Thalia and Luke, back before things with Luke went so badly. I am also eagerly awaiting another classic, first-person Percy point-of-view story. While I love the Heroes books, I miss being privy to Percy’s snark and wit via his first person narration (the Heroes of Olympus books are told in third person). And I definitely won’t turn down a Leo story, either, because he’s one of my favorite new characters. (Fwiw, if you’ve read the Percy books but haven’t yet read The Demigod Files, I would recommend it solely for The Sword of Hades, which was my favorite story from that installment.)

Release Date: August 14, 2012

I love the Percy Jackson series and the Heroes of Olympus series. I can’t wait to read this book and learn new stories that include some of the characters I know and love.

Agreed! That’s why I like this little short story collections so much. It helps you get to know the characters even better. :)

      Thanks for stopping by!

  5. I Love Rick Riordan! But I’m so far behind :( I read all of Percy Jackson and the first of the Kane Chronicles, but that’s it! They’re on the list though!

    • Merin says:

I liked the Kane Chronicles books a lot, but my heart still belongs to Percy. I am enjoying the Heroes books, but really miss Percy’s first-person narration; he’s such a great character.

I’m a die hard Rick Riordan fan as well!! I just love everything that he’s written. I was so excited that Percy was back in the Son of Neptune, even though it wasn’t first person, it was great to have his perspective back in the story again! I’m absolutely dying for The Mark of Athena, now though! Hopefully this book will help make the wait go faster. =)

    Great pick!

“You have a feast for tuna?” :D While I liked The Lost Hero, and think Jason and I will get along wonderfully, I definitely missed Percy. I understand why they’re not first-person, since there is more than one viewpoint being used, but it’s sad to read Percy’s point of view when you can’t hear all of his snark.

I’m also looking forward for this! I love everything from Rick Riordan! LOL!

  8. Ahh! I am a HUGE Rick Riordan fan myself! I’m dying for it to be OCtober so I can read “The mark of Athena”!!! I love finding other bloggers who enjoy the books as much as I do :-) I can’t wait to check out the DemiGod Diaries in August, it’ll have to tide me over I suppose.

    • Merin says:

The Mark of Athena is quite high on my “desperately want to read” list, but I figured this one was closer to being released, so I could focus on it instead. :)
