Top Ten Books I Recommend the Most

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish. Each week they will post a new Top Ten list that one of the bloggers there at The Broke and the Bookish will answer. Everyone is welcome to join!

I seem to only be completing Top Ten Tuesday once a month of late, but I’ve had other posts that had to go up the past few Tuesdays, so this was the first free week I’ve had in a while. I really love this meme, though, so am going to try to make sure I participate more from here on out!

Today’s topic is the Top Ten Books I Recommend the Most, which as a librarian is right up my alley. I’m going to focus on the YA titles I recommend, though, rather than the titles I recommend to my elementary students, simply because I feel those are of the most interest. Should you want to hear my MG/beginning reader recommendations, though, I will definitely share them in comments!

In no particular order, here are my choices!

lightningthiefThe Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson & the Olympians #1) by Rick Riordan

bookthiefThe Book Thief by Markus Zusak

ordinarymagicOrdinary Magic by Caitlen Rubino-Bradway

howlsmovingcastleHowl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones

gravemercyGrave Mercy (His Fair Assassin #1) by Robin LaFevers

croakCroak (Croak #1) by Gina Damico

nightcircusThe Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

impossibleImpossible by Nancy Werlin

audreywaitAudrey, Wait! by Robin Benway

gallaghergirls1I’d Tell You I Love You, But Then I’d Have to Kill You (Gallagher Girls #1) by Ally Carter

Each of these books has something that makes me recommend them at various points (fun, fluffy reads; kick-ass heroines; amazing settings; emotional, heart-wrenching journeys; etc.), and it goes without saying that I adore them all. :)

What did you choose this week? Please link me!

  2. Janita says:

I love love love The Lightning Thief!! Fave series ever. I need to read Howl’s Moving Castle! I’ve only seen the Ghibli movie (which was amazing).

  3. tinalinatime says:

The GG series is one of my absolute favorites so I feel like I’m constantly recommending them to my students and friends! Carter just does such a wonderful job with them. :)

  4. Michelle says:

Audrey Wait! was really cute… and I really want to read The Ghallager Girls series but I can never find book 1 anywhere!! I guess I’ll have to order it :) The Night Circus also looks good!

Thanks for stopping by My TTT

  5. Audrey, Wait! was so much fun. It’s another one that I recommend to teens frequently. Robin Benway has such great musical taste that I put together a playlist of all the song title chapter headings. If you’re interested and on Spotify, I’ll share it with you.

  6. Briana says:

The Night Circus is also on my list! It’s such a beautiful and unique book! I hope Morgenstern is working on something else; I would love to read it.

I have also recommended The Book Thief a lot. I think it can appeal to such a diverse range of readers.

  7. Rebecca says:

My friend has been trying to get me to read the Percy Jackson books for ages. Maybe I really should read them, lol. I’m so excited for Grave Mercy’s sequel, Dark Triumph!

  8. I really want to read The Lightening Thief! Also, I started reading The Book Thief and the library copy I had gotten had a bug crawl out from the pages so I quickly threw it as far away from me as possible then returned it without finishing it lol. But I’ve seen it on a few people’s lists so maybe I”ll have to pick it up again. -Melissa @ Harley Bear Book Blog

  9. Jessica says:

The Book Thief is one I keep getting recommended. Must read it soon. The Night Circus keeps calling my name when I see it in a book store.

Almost put the Gallagher Girls on my list too, they are great books. the Book Thief is sitting on my shelf to be read still thought, can’t wait to get into it.

  11. Ellie says:

I flat out loved Ordinary Magic. It was an original spin on the magical universe concept with a great central character in Abby Hale. It was a great adventure with a lot of humor and excellent fleshing out of the supporting cast of characters and also a very good lesson about the effects of prejudice. More of a MG than YA.
Also recommend The Book Thief and Night Circus is on the TBR pile.

    • Merin says:

Yes, it’s definitely more MG, but still SO good that I think anyone would enjoy it. It’s nice to see someone else who agrees about how amazing it is! :)

  12. angelicreader says:

I have seen so many people recommend The Book Thief this week that I will just have to go get it.
    Thanks for the recommendations!

  13. Brittany says:

Loved Grave Mercy and The Night Circus! I just finished reading Robin Benway’s Also Known As and now I REALLY REALLY know how much I need to read Audrey, Wait! Haha.
    Great list! :)

  14. Asti (A Bookish Heart) says:

Yay for The Book Thief and Night Circus! Love both of those books! One for the emotional punch and the other for the magical world created. Great choices!

Croak and Grave Mercy definitely intrigue me. I think I need to be putting those on my TBR list. Eek!

    • Merin says:

Both of these books are on my favorites list. Croak is SO funny, I pretty much laughed through the whole thing! And Grave Mercy was such a well done historical romance. Definitely pick them up soon if you can!

  15. Grave Mercy is on my to read list!

  16. The book thief is also on my list. I love that book. Grave Mercy is wonderful as well, I can’t wait to read Dark Triumph <3 Ordinary magic is on my reading list :D

I just checked out The Book Thief from the library, I am excited to listen to it! I really enjoyed Impossible (I don’t know if its old or something, I don’t see many people mention it). I am in the middle of the Gallagher Girls series. I finished Book 3 today and am now on Book4, LOVING it!.

Impossible is older, although it has won some awards. I’ve only read the first 2 Gallagher Girls books, but definitely want to continue the series!
